Fukuoka Study Tour Concludes Successfully – HSUHK CS

Visiting Universities and Companies, Experiencing Japanese Technology and Culture

The Department of Computer Science, School of Decision Sciences, The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK), organised the “HSUHK Computer Science Study Tour 2026” from 31 July to 4 August 2026. The tour led 29 students and 3 teacher leaders to Fukuoka, Japan, for a five-day academic, corporate and cultural visit. It aimed to take students beyond the classroom, introduce them to Japan’s academic environment, information technology industry and cultural traditions, and enhance their cross-cultural communication and teamwork skills.

The itinerary covered academic exploration, company visits and cultural experiences. Students visited Kyushu Sangyo University, where they exchanged with local students and learned about the campus’s learning and research facilities. They also visited WingArc1st Inc. and Nishitetsu Information System Co., Ltd., attended company presentations, learned about the development of Japanese IT companies in business applications, transportation systems and digital transformation, and exchanged views with company representatives on job requirements, skills training and industry trends.

In terms of cultural and technological experiences, the tour visited teamLab, Kyushu National Museum, TOTO Museum, Kokura Castle, Tanga Market, Kyushu Railway History Museum and Lalaport. Students also took part in a talk with the Tourism Organization of Dazaifu, boating on the Yanagawa River, sunset yakiniku at Mt. Sarakura and kaiseki cuisine, gaining a multi-faceted understanding of Fukuoka and the Kyushu region through history, technology, food and urban life. They also experienced Japanese culture and reflected on how tradition and modern technology can coexist.

After returning to Hong Kong, a reflective presentation session was held on 13 August 2026. Students shared what they had learned in groups and compared practices in retail innovation, the IT industry and environmental protection between Japan and Hong Kong, demonstrating cross-cultural observation and reflection. According to the post-tour evaluation, 20 valid responses were received, representing a response rate of approximately 69%. Most students rated meals, transportation, teacher guidance, company visits, the school visit and sightseeing arrangements as “Excellent” or “Good”, indicating an overall positive response.

The Department of Computer Science said that the study tour achieved its objectives in academic exploration, professional development, cultural exposure and personal growth. Students not only deepened their understanding of Japan’s IT industry and academic environment, but also broadened their international horizons and developed cross-cultural communication skills. The Department hopes that students will apply what they have learned to their future studies and career planning, and continue to actively participate in international exchanges.

The study tour was subsidised by SDSC, and the Department of Computer Science would like to express its sincere gratitude. The Department also thanks all teachers, students and partner organisations who participated in and supported the event.
