BSc (Hons) in Applied Computing Orientation Day Successfully Held
The Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Applied Computing programme recently held its Orientation Day. A group of new students first attended the Decision School welcome session, where they listened to welcoming and encouraging remarks from the Dean of the school and other senior representatives. They then moved to the Computer Science Department’s home base for a series of departmental orientation activities. The event covered programme information, meet-the-teachers’ sessions, ice-breaking games, a lunch gathering and a campus tour, aiming to help new students quickly understand programme requirements, the teaching team and campus resources, and to build a sense of belonging to the programme.
At the beginning of the Orientation Day, new students attended the school welcome session and listened to welcome speeches by the Dean CHAN and other senior representatives. The Dean and representatives extended a warm welcome to the students and encouraged them to make the most of their university years by learning proactively, exploring boldly and making good use of the resources provided by the university, school and the department, so as to lay a solid foundation for their future academic and professional development.

The students then went to the Department’s home base, where Dr. Chris hosted the departmental welcome session. Dr. Chris gave a detailed introduction to essential information on starting university, graduation, classes and participation in extracurricular activities. The content covered key areas such as commencement arrangements, graduation requirements, classroom learning and extracurricular participation, enabling new students to gain a clearer understanding of their study journey in the coming years and to plan their university life early.

During the event, Head of Department Prof. LIU and Programme Director Dr. Willy delivered welcome speeches. They expressed a sincere welcome to the new students and introduced the programme philosophy and learning direction.

The Dean of the Decision Science also attended the Department’s event in person and delivered a welcome speech, to the great honour of the teachers and students present. The Dean took time out of a busy schedule to join the event, fully demonstrating the school’s emphasis on and support for the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Applied Computing programme and the development of new students.

Afterwards, personal tutors, exchange programme advisers and all COM lecturers greeted the students one by one, enabling new students to learn about the support network available to them for academic guidance, exchange programmes and daily learning. The warm greetings from the teachers added to the friendly atmosphere and helped students feel the cohesion of the programme’s team.

To help new students get to know one another, Dr. Willy and Dr. CCK led the students in ice-breaking games. Through relaxed and fun interactive activities, the students quickly broke down barriers, deepened their understanding of one another and built peer friendships amid laughter. The atmosphere was lively and brought the Orientation Day to a climax.

The event concluded with lunch, where teachers and students took the opportunity to continue chatting in a harmonious atmosphere. After lunch, the students were divided into three teams and led by different lecturers, toured the campus. They visited teaching and learning facilities across the campus and learned about their daily class venues and learning resources, preparing themselves for the university life ahead.
The O-Day not only enabled new students to grasp important information about starting university, classes, graduation and extracurricular activities, but also promoted exchanges among teachers, students and peers, reflecting the Department’s care for the whole-person development of new students. The event ended successfully amid laughter and interaction, kicking off the new academic year. The Department hopes that students will actively participate and support one another in their future learning journey and embark on a fulfilling and wonderful university life.
